About The Greater Victoria LEADERSHIP NOMINATION RECOGNITION The Greater Victoria Velodrome Association is truly worthy of recognition. This non-profit organization has provided affordable cycling for all levels of riders. Our family discovered the GVVA during a cycling festival in the spring of 2002. We were unable to purchase a road bike for our daughter Katie and knew she needed companionship and safety in learning to ride. Katie met a young woman named Breanna Loster who had the courage to ride with the men and win most races she encountered. Katie began riding within a week. The experienced riders quickly helped Katie feel comfortable on the track. Within two weeks, they recognized her lack of confidence in team riding. Three of the experienced riders joined Katie in a race called the team pursuit. These powerful riders slowed themselves down to match Katie’s speed. Katie was beaming with joy as she discovered she could flow with the team movement; and avoided injury. Over the past two years, this wonderful group of riders has welcomed many women and girls to join them including myself. I set out a goal of riding one kilometer as a start to my endurance-one lap at a time; success achieved. We now have a 25 member multilevel team sponsored by Dr. Wayne Walker. I enjoy the opportunity to volunteer for the race events while watching our young women develop in a safe and enjoyable sport. This year we plan a women’s only night to provide those of us who wish to set goals of riding laps, the environment to do so. Katie had several girl friends join her at the track this year. Her favorite race is the Kieran--- traveling behind a motor bike up to a pace speed of 50kms per hour then the race begins. GVVA members have made it possible for Katie to grow in her skill and competence and become the confident young woman she is today. My husband and I feel honoured to be part of this wonderful group of people. This well-established group will enable countless numbers of women and teen girls to enjoy recreation at a safe and affordable level. We have the ability to remain active for decades! Yours truly, |
