FloraGLO Track BC Cup #2 Race Report for Trackfest #1 / FloraGLO Track BC Cup #2 29 racers came out to brave the hot and dry weather at the Juan de Fuca Velodrome outside of Victoria, for the first of three Trackfest events, and the second of five events in the new FloraGLO Track BC Cup series! The day opened with a Madison, which served as a demonstration event, and a great warm-up for all riders. Gears were limited for the riders, in order to balance things out, and allow for A, B and C riders to join in the fun. The group mostly stuck together, and after a few laps the slings smoothed out and great racing was enjoyed. As an explanation, there are actually two ‘Cups’ in the Track BC Cup, one being a cup for Endurance events, with full A, B & C categories; and there is also an open Sprint cup, in which any and all could compete for BC Cup points and glory. In the C category, BVC newcomer Mike Sidic dominated the field, winning each race, followed by his buddy Adam Barlev. Two more Vancouverites, junior rider Ben Cowburn and Rob McMurtry, took 3rd and 4th in the overall Omnium, and Victoria old-timer David Emery held in for 5th to help celebrate his 69th birthday! Victoria also had two younger Juniors out, William Holder and James Graham, who picked up some great track experience. The B and A categories were combined, due to slightly lower numbers, which made for a big field, and constant high speeds! When all was said and done, B category racer Mike Cooper from Victoria captured the most B Omnium points to leave him in the lead, over Luis Bernhardt and Jason Burch from Vancouver. Chris Anstey and Roland Rabien, both from Victoria, rode strong races to collect 4th and 5th, respectively. For the A’s, it was all about Vancouver. Matt Chater rode predictably strong, and thanks in part to a large Fast Twitch team presence, he the tore victory from the hands of his competitors in each race, collecting full Omnium points. Mike McCorkell kept him honest finishing 2nd overall, and Glenn Barr followed his team captain’s lead, for 3rd. Two more Fast Twitch racers rounded out the top five, being Kelyn Akuna and Andy George. Victoria’s only hope in the A category was Dave Shishkoff, who not only collected 6th, but also unashamedly included himself unnecessarily in this report. Vegan Power! In the Open Sprint Cup, Matt Barlee from Victoria was untouchable, also collecting full Omnium points. Teammates Kelyn Akuna, Matt Chater and Keith Bruneau collected 2nd through 4th, and Mike McCorkell rounded out the top five in the Dudes With Big Legs portion of the event, demonstrating in a friendly way to Victoria that the A’s really need to pick it up! Lesley White was the only female competitor to show, and did great for her first track event, laughing wildly as she sped across the finish line.
